Based on the Victorian novel by Sir Walter Besant and James Rice – By Celia’s Arbour: A Tale of Portsmouth Town – we focus this series of events on the early music hall in Portsmouth. Using puppets, sailor dances, bawdy songs and rotten jokes this touring show celebrates the literary history of Portsmouth. Building on previous heritage storytelling by Harmer and Smith, this performance brings to life an old form of popular entertainment in a miniature variety show. We will tour 5 pubs in Portsmouth. Dance and puppetry, combined with original music and reinvented old songs. Celebrating working class culture as part of Portsmouth’s literary heritage through an interactive performance.
